It was almost a year ago today that the Volkswagen announced that the highly anticipated “Golf R” was coming to America. Now that the hot hatch will be available in a few months, VW has finally announced the pricing starting around $33, 990 for the two-door model.

What is even more exciting, is that the Golf R, with 256 horsepower, will be the most powerful VW sports performance car to have ever been sold in the U.S..

On the outside, you can see that VW has made some sweet changes. Every model is equipped with LED daytime running lights and a black radiator grille that sits in front of the car.

The interior has also been enhanced greatly. You can expect to be comfortable in deep bucket, leather seats while you enjoy the Golf’s Premium VIII audio with eight speakers, aux-in, a Media Device Interface with iPod® connectivity, and Bluetooth capability.

Volkswagen Concept Cars

For car lovers and enthusiast out there, what is cooler than concept cars?

A couple of weeks ago in Frankfurt, Germany Volkswagen was featured in the 64^th International Motor Show where they unveiled some sweet concept Volkswagen models, including the NILS and the Beetle R.

NILS

The NILS looks like a Jedi should be stepping out of it any minute. It has a cool sci-fi, futuristic look about it; however, it was intended for urban commuters because it takes up minimal parking space. While this car is small, it can reach 80mph with no emissions or noise! How sweet is that? Not to mention its wing doors and individual fenders for each aluminum alloy wheel.

Beetle R

The Beetle R is my favorite. In case you were wondering, the “R” stands for “racing.” That’s right, the loveable bug is a force to be reckoned with.  Every aesthetic feature on this beetle seems to have a purpose. Take the wide bumpers for instance. The wider bumpers actually improve aerodynamics and the pair of chrome exhaust pipes are designed to improve handling at top speeds.

Since Volkswagen vehicles came to America in 1949, the company has been known to produce the most recognizable and identifiable cars in the industry. The same is true for the Jetta SportWagen, which is a new VW model that has only been apart of the Volkswagen family since 2009.

The SportWagen is in a league of its own because it has uniquely combined the feel of German luxury with the versatility and cargo room of a wagon. History of The VW Beetle

The Volkswagon Beetle has a long and interesting history. It started back before World War II over in Germany. A man named Ferdinand Porsche dreamed of a car that could be mass-produced and sold to the average German citizen.

In 1934 the German government decided to support the idea of a Volkswagon, which literally means the ‘peoples car’ in German. Porches’ assignment was to create a car that could carry a family of five at a speed of 60mph with a price of 1000 Reichmarks – which was about the price of a motorcycle at that time.

Porsche spent the next few years building prototypes. The car design was meant to be simple, as to hopefully not have to take it in to be serviced. One feature the car had was that its suspension design used compact torsion bars which allowed the Beetle to float on top of water for a few minutes.

After WWII and the Americans invaded Germany, the US handed the Volkswagen industrial plant over to the Brittish. Lucky for VW, the Brittans believed the “Beetle” was a dud. They said that  “the vehicle does not meet the fundamental technical requirement of a motor-car … it is quite unattractive to the average buyer … To build the car commercially would be a completely uneconomic enterprise.” It was later reopened, however, and in 1949 the Type 1 design came out:

The 1950’s started some major design changes for The Beetle and in the 1960’s sales boomed thanks to smart and clever advertising campaigns. This is the 1956 VW design: 

The 1970s brought more changes. The 1973 model indroduced a curved windshield which allowed a padded dashboard to replace the vertical dashboard of previous models. This model also has a 2-speed heater fan, higher rear mudguards, and a new front hood design.

After the 70’s the Beetle faced some stiff competition against other foreign cars that had rear wheel drive and other new features. However, as of 2009, the Beetle was considered the world’s best-selling car design.
